In the summer of 2012 we launched our first health initiative, with the help of  one of our partner organization – Homeopaths Without Borders. We selected 30 candidates to participate in this training program with the hope that we would be building local health care capacity and an environment of sustainability for the practitioners. The training program was 4 week-long sessions.

Health Initiative in Haiti starts with trained Homeopathic Communitaires

2013 Class of Homeopathic Communitaires

Return 2 Haiti underwrote each of the students for $200 to cover the cost of food and lodging at $10/day. By comparison typical wages in Haiti for a month in the rural settings averages between $20-$25 per month. Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine created in 1796 by Samuel Hahnemann, based on his doctrine of like cures like, according to which a substance that causes the symptoms of a disease in healthy people will cure similar symptoms in sick people.

While there will still be a need for a health clinic to address the more dramatic injuries, illnesses or chronic conditions that the people of Haiti may face, it is the Homeopath Communitaires that are beginning to build credibility and trust as local health care providers.

In August of 2013 in a return visit to Haiti, one of our primary objectives was to celebrate the 20 individuals that earned their certification and to hear directly from them what their assessments of health needs are for rural Haiti.

We were heartened to learn that those students that had not achieved certification were still interested in continuing their education in order to achieve certification. And, even more exciting, those that had earned their certificate were already building trust in their communities and establishing their sustainable health practices.

This trip to Haiti served as a great reminder of our resolve to offer resources that are welcomed by the locals of Haiti, represents something that they can own well beyond our intervention, and that meets a real and defined need.
